May 24, Colombo: Sri Lankan graduates have again started agitations seeking employment in the already swollen public service despite the promises by the government to grant them employment immediately.
Around 200 unemployed graduates started a protest in front of the Sanath Jayasuriya stadium in Matara amidst chaos vowing to continue their campaign until employments are granted. Unemployed graduates of the Central Province have also launched a similar campaign for weeks.
The Minister of Education Susil Prema Jayantha answering a question raised by an MP said to the parliament on Tuesday that 10,000 graduates would be recruited to the public service before the end of June. They include over 7,000 teachers.

While appreciating providing jobs to unemployed I would categorically against the practice of providing government jobs to unemployed graduates. If we need to develop this country and the education system a brave leader of this country should stop this practice. We need to announce that NO GOVERNMENT JOBS ENSURED FOR UNIVERSITY GRADUATES AFTER 5 YEARS. The job of government is not to just provide jobs. It should facilitae developing the economy to generate more productive employment. In 21st century higher education target is to provide university degrees to 100% population( Of course it is the target). If this country can achieve this we will have all graduates in the government ( Not the political leadership. 51% who cannot pass GCE (0/L) can think of that sector)
