Teachers’ trade unions in Sri Lanka accused authorities of intimidating teachers who are boycotting marking A/L exam papers.

Lanka Teachers’ Association (LTA) said the authorities are using police to intimidate teachers after the talks between the authorities and trade unions collapsed on Wednesday.

The teachers have been boycotting marking A/L exam papers for nearly 20 days urging the authorities to rectify their pay anomalies.

LTA General Secretary Joseph Stalin told BBC Sandeshaya that police officials around the island are intimidating the teachers after the talks ended with no agreement.

“The police officials are visiting teacher’s residents asking whether they are prepared to mark the papers,” he said.

He said the police action is amounted to threatening.

“Many teachers were ordered to report to the police,” Joseph Stalin told BBCSinhala.com.

The teachers unions are planning to stage the walk out on Thursday as the financial authorities refused to amend the pay circular as agreed with the education ministry, he added.

  1. There are two economies; one the command economy where everything is politically decided includindg the salary of a particular segment and people accept the decision without much grumbling- probably they don’t have a choice; the other pne is the liberal economy where everything is decided by the market (demand and supply), here again including the salary and if people are unhappy they can move in to another institution that pays better. If none is operated in a country this is the situation we could expect; no political command and no market mechanism; neither the Soviet Union nor the USA.
